Progetto Sospeso

Sono spiacente di comunicare che per cause di forza maggiore il progetto Linux4One è sospeso a tempo indeterminato.

Questa decisione, molto difficile, è stata presa dal team di sviluppo per vari motivi:

  • il team è molto limitato e ognuno per motivi suoi (figli, lavoro, ecc) si ritrova senza tempo da dedicare alla distro;
  • Linux4One è nata poiché l'hardware del nostro netbook preferito non era perfettamente supportato. Adesso ci troviamo nella situazione contraria, le distribuzioni esistenti gestiscono alla perfezione l'hardware mentre noi non riusciamo a far fronte ai nuovi modelli (abbiamo contattato Acer per avere dei netbook in prova e non si sono neanche degnati di risponderci).

Ovviamente resteremo presenti sul forum e faremo del nostro meglio per dare supporto alla versione 1.5.
Linux4One 2.0 (full e light) ovviamente è da considerarsi sospesa.

Cos'è Linux4one

Linux4One è una distribuzione italiana studiata per funzionare out of the box sul NetBook Aspire One di Acer. Essendo il tutto già  configurata in maniera ottimale la distribuzione è adatta anche ai meno esperti.
Da oggi esiste anche una versione Light con desktop traduzionale e solo il software utile per l'uso di un netbook, cioè Web, chat, scrittura di piccoli documenti e niente più.

Caratteristiche versione full

  • Kernel compilato appositamente per l'hardware del Netbook Acer Aspire One (e similari)
  • Tempi di boot ridotti (anche con SSD)
  • Tutto l'hardware funzionante al primo colpo, compresi i lettori SD (quello di sinistra non funziona come Storage Expansion ma come normale card reader) e il led della scheda wireless
  • Ridotte al minimo le scrittura su disco (log, ecc.) onde preservarne la durata
  • Varie ottimizzazioni per migliorare la reattività  del sistema
  • OSD per i tasti speciali
  • Interfaccia Netbook Remix
  • Lingua italiana e inglese (sono in programma localizzazioni in altre lingue)
  • Basata su Ubuntu 8.04.2 LTS (supporto per 3 anni) con conseguente accesso ai repository
  • Kernel 2.6.29 (con driver ath5k), Icecat browser, Emesene con supporto Webchat, Openoffice 3, Network Manager 0.7 e VLC con tutti i codec
  • Tool, scritti dagli sviluppatori della distribuzione, per la rotazione dello schermo e per la scelta del tipo di interfaccia grafica (netbook remix o gnome liscio)
  • Tool Umtsmon per monitorare le connessioni umts
  • Fing strumento da linea di comando dedicato al networking  e service discovery, ovvero la scoperta degli host presenti in rete, e dei servizi attivi su di essi. Ulteriori info sul sito http://www.over-look.com/site/
  • Supporto per Asus eeepc in fase di testing
  • Nuovo tema di login

Caratteristiche versione Light

  • Desktop manager lxde;
  • Spazio su disco occupato 1.5 gb;
  • Boot in 40 secondi;
  • Osd attivi (ovvero se premete fn piu f7 o premete il tasto del wifi) compare l'icona dell'azione (presente anche nella 1.1 attualmente in beta testing privato);
  • il led del wifi ora si spegne se si preme l'apposito tasto (idem come sopra);
  • bluetooth funzionante  (come sopra);
  • supporto per eeepc 701.
  • altre migliorie.....

Come e dove è nata l'idea

Il blasonato Asus eeepc può² vantare "milioni" di distribuzioni specifiche alternative a Xandros, mentre gli utenti dell'Aspire One dovevano accontentarsi di Linpus o picchiarsi a sangue con le altre distro per far funzionare tutto l'hardware.Quindi un piccolo gruppo di utenti coordinandosi all'interno di un forum di supporto e/o via msn, senza essersi mai visti prima,  decide di modificare la iso di Ubuntu.
Dopo un pò di lavoro nasce Linux4One.

Il 13 Maggio è stata rilasciata la versione 1.5 nome in codice Zankai Ken scaricala da qui
La beta 1 della versione light è stata rilasciata il 18 Febbraio ed è possibile scaricarla qui

Project Suspended

I regret to inform you that due to force majeure Linux4One the project is suspended indefinitely.This decision, very difficult, was taken by the development team for several reasons:

  • the team is very limited and each for his own reasons (children, work, etc.) is found without time for distro;
  • Linux4One arose because the hardware of our favorite netbooks was not fully supported. Now we are in the opposite situation, the distributions of existing hardware and operating perfectly we can not cope with the new models (we have contacted Acer netbook tested and did not even deign to respond).

Of course remain on the forum and we will do our best to give support to version 1.5.Linux4One 2.0 (full and light) course is considered suspended.

What's linu4one

Linux4one is an Italian distribution studied to work out of the box on Acer's Aspire One Netbook. Very well configured, the distribution is perfect also for those who are less experts.

Full version Characteristics 

  • Personalized kernel
  • Reduced Boot times (even with SSD)
  • Functioning hardware from the start, including SD readers (the left doesn't act as Storage Expansion but as regular Card reader) and wireless led
  • Minimum disk writing (log. etc.) to preserve duration
  • Various optimizations to enhance the system's reaction times
  • OSD for special keys
  • Netbook Remix Interface
  • Italian and English language (other languages will be added as well)
  • Based on ubuntu 8.04.2 LTS ( 3 year support) resulting in repository access
  • Kernel 2.6.29 (with ath5k drivers), Icecat browser, Emesene with Webchat support, Openoffice 3, Network Manager 0.7 and Vlc with all codecs
  • Tools, written by distro developers, to rotate the screen and to select your favorite interface (Netbook remix or classic gnome)
  • Tool Umtsmon to monitorate the umts connections

Light version Characteristics 

  • Lxde desktop manager;
  • Space occupied on disk: 1.5 gb;
  • 40 Seconds boot time;
  • Active Osd (meaning that if you press fn plus f7 or the wifi button the action icon appears, also present in the current 1.1 private beta testing);
  • the wif led now turns off if the relative button is pressed (same as above);
  • Functioning bluetooth (as above);
  • eeepc 701 support;
  • other improvements.....

How was the idea born

Famous Asus eeepc can acount for "milions" of specific distributions as an alternative to Xandros, while the Aspire One users have to settle for Linpus or hassle greatly with the olter distro alternatives in order to make all the hardware work. thus a small group of users decided to modify Ubuntu's iso, coordinating with one another throguh a support forum and/or msn, and without ever meeting i person!
After some work, linux4one is born.
